A WISCONSIN DOUBLE HEADER-CHEESE CURDS AND PAUL BUNYAN
A small but appreciative group of members enjoyed a double header of a true Wisconsin product and folklore at our April 17th meeting. Direct from FarmerJohn’s Cheese in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, we were treated to fresh cheese curds as a special snack. At last month’s meeting, a new member asked: “Do you know where we can get Wisconsin cheese curds?” It pays to ask questions, and with the assistance of Jerry King, Dinah’s nephew (a March meeting guest), we arranged to have some award winning cheese curds shipped down for the April meeting. (PS: we also found some from Ellsworth Wis. at the Marion Market in small packages).
Our featured speaker, Michael Edmunds, author of several books, talked to us about one of his more recent endeavors, “OUT OF THE NORTHWOODS-The many lives of Paul Bunyan”. In doing research for the book, Michael found that the earliest mention of “Paul Bunyan” came from loggers working in the Tomahawk Wisconsin logging camps. So while other states sometimes claim this mythic figure as their own, Wisconsin is where the story of Paul Bunyan and Babe his Blue Oz first took root.
We also welcomed two new members, Kathleen Woit (Madison) and Ron Anderson (Madison).

Joint Wisconsin Club Golf Outings
Signup for the Joint Wisconsin Club Golf outing on May 6th (Hawkes Bay or Saddlebrook) has been completed. Marylyn Butenhof will be at our next meeting to sign up interested members for the fall event ($2) which will be on September 30th. Foursomes are picked at random. Participants get a ticket for a pitcher of beer or a soft drink. The group gathers after golf at a local restaurant for drinks and awarding of prizes. It is a great way to get to know other former Wisconsin people. Ray Haas (352-750-5142) of the Paradise Club is the event Chair.
Program Ideas Welcomed
Have you attended another meeting that featured entertainment you would like at our club? Do you remember a past club entertainer or subject you want to have us bring back? What types of meetings do you like? Let MaryKay Childress (MaryKay.Childress@yahoo.com), incoming VP Jeanne Engle (email@example.com) or any other board member know what you like to see, hear or do.
President’s Personal Message
My apologies for having a “Senior” moment and not remembering the new member’s name who asked about cheese curds. While shipping is not cheap, the logistics worked well and the reception from our members was great. I think we can look forward to doing this again.
If you are heading north for the summer, don’t forget to consider donating some of your non-perishable extra food supplies to a local food pantry. Both Hope Lutheran Church and New Covenant Methodist Church accept donations for the Wildwood Soup Kitchen and food pantry.
Despite not watching the Wisconsin spring football game, I am looking forward to this coming season with great anticipation. By the time you get this newsletter, the Packers will have drafted a new crop of rookies they hope will be a fit for the team. Only time will tell how many will contribute. The Brewers are around 500 (an improvement over other years) and have the league home run leader (Eric Thames).
Some of the first baseball games I listened to were Chicago Cubs games at my barber’s shop. He must have rejoiced with their winning the World Series last fall. Locally, a new Chicago Cubs club is being formed in the villages. Contact Gary Koca at firstname.lastname@example.org if interested.
As you go about your daily activities, either here in the Villages, or while up north or traveling, be proud to say “We are from Wisconsin”.
