March 2019 President’s Message

Happy St. Patty’s Month Wisconsin Club Lake Sumter!!!

“When Irish eyes are smiling…”  What are the rest of us doing? (chucking to myself) I’m not Irish but I cannot pass up a green beer and corn beef n cabbage this weekend, and I’ve been known to bust out a clumsy Irish Jig or two.  Hope to see a huge Wisconsin presence down at the squares!

I’d like to take this time to welcome our New Members!  I meant to include them in my January and February newsletter; please accept my apology for not doing my due diligence in a timely manner.  Let’s Welcome to our WI Club, Lake Sumter, our New Members so far this year!

How are we looking in the sports arena?

The Bucks are the #1 Team in the NBA!  #AWESOMESAUCE!

In NCAA Men’s basketball last night [#2 seed] Marquette beat [#7 Seed] St John’s at Madison Square Garden in the Big East Tournament!  The Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball team will play Nebraska in the Big Ten Conference Championship. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for both of these amazing teams!   Go Golden Eagles!!!!  Go Badgers!!!

Our Brewers will start their opening season against the Cardinals on Mar. 28th“Brewer Fever” begins!!!!!

Also, we are working on gathering information regarding the Wisconsin/USF football game in Tampa, Sat. 8/31.  Dick Thies is coordinating this event for us.  Here is an update from him today:  The game is on Friday, August 30, 2019, which almost certainly will be a night game.  Tickets are $65 thru the UW.  I can request the needed tickets but actual availability will depend on overall requests and my priority status.  I would not know until the end of May the number of tickets we would get.  Although I have not yet talked to Senior Adventures, Lamers has a 36-passenger bus (limited quantity) and a 56-passenger bus.  If we were to fill the 36-bus cost would be under $25 per person.  With the 56 we would need at least 46 to keep the cost at $25.  The Wisconsin season ticket application deadline is April 20 for both season and single game requests.  Please stay tuned for more details!  Dick will be in the back of our meeting room for sign-ups and Q & As.

OK, so let’s take a glimpse at our upcoming events.

Wisconsin Singers

The Wisconsin Singers will be here again on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, with performances at 5 and 8 PM.

Did you get your tickets?  The seats are filling up! It has been reported that over 1000 tickets have already been sold!  We are hopeful to have a write-up in The Daily Sun this week as well.  This group of high energy college students, most of whom are not music majors, get no funding from the University of Wisconsin.  In addition to helping them fund continued performances, our purchase of tickets serves as a fundraiser for the three Wisconsin Clubs in the Villages.

Discount coupons are still available.

This year our club is responsible for getting the Subs, snacks and bottled water, etc. for the singers during the event (we will be reimbursed).  I am picking up the food, drinks, coolers, etc. to have for the kids at 3:30 on the 19th.  We will be setting up in the Green Room at the Savannah Center.  I could use at least 4 people to help in between the shows to serve/assist the group and show our appreciation and support for them.  If you’d like to volunteer, please call or text me (MaryKay) at 315-396-3030.  Once the 2nd show starts, we will be packing everything, but a few cold drinks, into the coolers for them to take back on the road that night.  They only perform for The Villages, then they head to the Bahama House in Daytona for some well-deserved RnR before another rigorous schedule begins.

Event upate

So sorry the Hollerbach’s Day Trip and the WI Club Golf Outing had to be cancelled.  Lynn Bartlett and Joe Keyzers worked very hard to coordinate these for us, but we just didn’t have enough interest.  Please see Hal at our next meeting for refunds.
