May 2018 President’s Newsletter

May Meeting – We Party Even If It Rains!

A picnic has been a club tradition in May and this one was great despite having to be inside.  With our area pounded with heavy rain the previous evening, and much more predicted, Jeanne Engle called an “audible” Monday morning asking the Colony staff to set us up inside.  It was a great call as the rains returned as members were arriving.  Nancy Miller got the change in plans to those who had responded to our e-vite and over 80 members arrived with their favorite potluck dishes.  The ribs and chicken from Oakwood Smokehouse and Grill were great.  It reminded me of family reunions with great food and conversations.

We even added two new members, Joe Tomaszewski and Beth Ropel from New Berlin.  They had a great time and we expect to see them again soon.

The corn-hole completion involved 16 teams, eight in each bracket, with two eventual winners.  In a competition where a great shot canceled out a previous great shot (in the hole), we saw several matches go down to the wire with both teams having a chance to win with that last toss.  We don’t know (yet) if those scratch-off tickets proved to be big winners, but all had a great time.  Thanks, Jeanne for organizing the event.

50/50 Proceeds Go To Charities!

Thanks to all members who participated in our 50/50 drawings at each meeting.  Some of you wound up being lucky winners!  But the biggest winners are the charities receiving the club half of the money collected.  At our May 1st board meeting, we approved donations of $700 to Stanton/Wiersdale Elementary School and $600 to Combat Veterans to Careers.  Both groups will be asked to come to our January 2019 meeting to brief our members on their organizations.

Next Meeting – September 17, 2018.

We don’t meet again until September 17th at 7 PM.  Jeanne has comedian George Locke lined up for your entertainment.  Added details will be coming.

We expect to have our complete schedule of meetings posted on our website by fall. It will give you another place to check on upcoming programs.

Our next game night is Monday, May 28th.  Monday, June 25th, Monday, July 23rd, and Monday, August 27th are also game nights at 6 PM at the Bacall Rec Center on Canal Street.  If interested, just show up; BYOB and snacks.  These fun nights continue each month on the fourth Monday unless otherwise announced.

Several of our members, including myself and incoming President MaryKay Childress ( golfed in the joint golf outing with the Paradise club on May 5th at the Pimlico course.  Next fall you will be able to sign-up for the end of September event for just $2.  After the event, golfers will get together for food, fellowship, and prizes.  THANK YOU Marylyn Butenhof for your efforts in getting our members involved.

President’s Personal Message.

As I write my last President’s newsletter, it is hard to realize that two years have passed so quickly.  I have truly enjoyed writing my newsletters.  You have found me to be a Wisconsin Badger fan thru and thru and that will continue.  Our season tickets have been ordered and health permitting, we will be in Madison for the start of the season.  Looking ahead, the Badgers play their 2019 season opener in Florida, an excellent opportunity for full-time residents to see a game in person without a long trip.

I have thanked many of you in person or publically for your help and support and I do so again.  One individual I haven’t thanked enough is my wife, Dinah.  Her support, encouragement, and proofreading of my newsletters have been an invaluable part of my fun time as your President.

Please give MaryKay Childress your support this coming club year.  Think about how much fun you could have being a part of the future leadership of the club.  I will still be around, in the background as Secretary, a job anyone of you could do.  Put your own “spin” on programs by being our next V.P. – Programs when we elect new officers next spring.

One last time, as you go about your daily activities, either here in the Villages, or while traveling, be proud to say “We are from Wisconsin”.

Your President
Richard Thies
