March 2018 President’s Message
Wisconsin Singers were great!
A big THANK YOU to the members who purchased tickets and attended The Wisconsin Singers performance Tuesday at the Savannah Center. Dinah and I were at the 5 PM show with a bunch of our neighbors. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of this organization, the students sang popular songs from the 1930’s to recent big hits. High energy dance routines were featured with each song. I think this was one of their best shows. Although we did not sell out either performance, ticket sales were up significantly over last year.
March Meeting recap
We had great attendance at our March 19th meeting featuring Me and My Gang plus fresh Wisconsin cheese curds from Farmer Johns Cheese in Dodgeville, Wis. We had a great show from our entertainers to the enjoyment of all. Plus, our cheese curds were all gone, almost before the program started. I don’t call myself a cheese lover but I really am beginning to love cheese curds. The proposed club golf outing was cancelled due to insufficient interest.
We continue to add new members: Welcome back Mary Lee DeKoch, Menasha (she was a member 17 years ago); welcome to Leigh Miresse, Mercer; Mary Moegenberg, Highcliff; Judy and Marvin Peters, Schofield/Manitowish Waters; and Fred Rummmel, Appleton. Vyto and Diane Kaocius, Franklin, sorry we inadvertently deleted you from our membership list.
April 16 meeting, 7 PM at Colony Rec. Center
Don’t miss our entertainment in April – Mark & Miller “Dance Party Duo.” Dan Miller and Donna Mark get the audience dancing in their seats or on the dance floor from their very first song and keep the excitement going all night long. Mark and Miller specialize in popular “Dance Party” hits from the 50’s through today. Soft jazz and beautiful ballads also give dancers a chance to get close and enjoy a romantic moment. Dan’s lead/rhythm guitar and vocals along with Donnas’ vocals and percussion are well enhanced by studio produced tracks. You’ll swear that you are dancing to a full live band.
BYOB and snacks to share at your table. Don’t be surprised if we do another member mixer; previous ones have been well received. Doors open at 6:30, meeting at 7:00 PM. Non-members may attend-$5 guest fee.
2018-19 Officer Elections
Election of officers for 2018-19 will occur at our April meeting. Our slate of officer candidates includes:
President, MaryKay Childress
Vice President-Programs, Jeanne Engle
Treasurer, Hal Baumann
Membership Chair and Assistant Treasurer, Roxanne Evans
Secretary, Richard Thies
Would you like to become a leader of our great club? We really could use a volunteer to handle the Secretary’s duties so I can serve as your past president. Nominations for all positions can be made from the floor. Newly elected officers will be invited to our May board meeting; official duties start on June 1st.
Our next game night is Monday April 23rd. Monday May 28th and Monday June 25th are also game nights at 6 PM at the Bacall Rec Center on Canal Street. If interested, just show up; BYOB and snacks. These fun nights continue each month on the fourth Monday unless otherwise announced.
Thank you to Judy Cimbalnik for organizing our dining out groups. This is an excellent way to get to know other club members. If you are a single, Judy has a group for you. If you haven’t participated, especially our new members, and want to be part of a future group, contact Judy at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 262-391-9869.
Joint Golf Outings
We will again be joining the Paradise club in two joint golf outings. These scramble events will be on Saturday May 5, and Saturday September 29. Cost is $2 per person. Marylyn Butenhof will be at our April meeting for our last chance to sign up for May 5th. You also can sign up for the September outing. After the events, members get together for food, fellowship and prizes. The May 5th event will be at the Pimlico and Belmont courses. Dinah and I have played previously and will do so again.
2018 Dues remain $5 per member
Joanie Schachtner will be collecting dues for 2018 at future meetings. New members will be issued new magnetic name holders at no charge. If one is lost, there will be a nominal replacement fee.
Membership list to be reviewed
At the end of May, we will be eliminating from our membership roster and email list the names of members who have not paid dues since June 1, 2016. If you are one of these members and wish to continue to receive club information, please attend the April or May meetings and renew your membership for $5 per member. As an alternative, write a check to Wisconsin Club Lake Sumter and mail it to Hal Baumann, 2003 Ridge Spring Drive, The Villages, Fl 32162.
President’s Personal Message.
Most of you know that I am a diehard Badger and Packer Fan. My comments are usually about football or some other Wisconsin sports activity. However, this month I want to talk about support of the Wisconsin Singers.
Previously, The Wisconsin Singers have had to raise about $50,000 from charitable donations to supplement the revenue from shows performed in order to meet expenses. Recent changes in tax law, loss of some matching grant money from the UW Foundation, music performance fees and other items have resulted in a need to raise an additional $50,000 each year. If you are already a donor or have plans to make a charitable donation to “The Friends of Wisconsin Singers Inc.”, THANK YOU. They receive no funding from the University of Wisconsin. The students are doing what they do because they love to do it, whether helping young kids through free clinics at the high schools where performances are given, or improving their communication skills and expertise for job interviews.
Dinah and I raised our level of support last year and plan to do so again this year. If you wish to help them reach their goal, checks should be made out to Friends of Wisconsin Singers, Inc. and mailed to Wisconsin Singers, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1320 Humanities BLDG., 455 North Park Street, Madison, Wis. 53706.
As you go about your daily activities, either here in the Villages, or while traveling, be proud to say “We are from Wisconsin”.
