January 2018 President’s Message
Imagine this: a senior citizen dressed in a red shirt with gold suspenders, navy blue shorts, green and white knee socks, white bowtie, and orange hat that drank out of a quart size mug. That was your president’s attempt to be “Nerdish” for our January 15th “Happy Nerd Year” meeting. We toasted our Badger football team’s 13-1 season, participated in some “Nerd inspired contests, had “Elvis” and “The Blues Brothers” dance for us, and got some dancing in ourselves.
But the best part was all the new members who showed up, had fun, and stayed late making new acquaintances. Many thanks to our members who took the “Nerd contest” to heart; there were some really good ideas on display. Two members took home prizes for being judged “best-dressed nerds” by The Traveling Nerd himself.
New members are: Judi Bessette, Menomonee Falls; Patrick and Barbie Bastien, Oshkosh; Eugene and Lori DeVries, Beaver Dam; Joan Diss, Waukesha; Joe and Holly Duerre, Hudson/Eau Claire; Roxanne Evans, Waukesha; Dennis and Mary Hoffman, Delavan; Tim and Mardi James, Whitefish Bay; Judi Keenan, Whitefish Bay; Wanda Land, St Croix Falls; Bill and Dee Schaal, Menasha; and Justin and Linda Ulatowski, Waukesha.
February 19, 2018 – Mary Jo Vitale – 7 PM
Performing on stage, with two 45 min. sets will be Mary Jo Vitale MacLean, the most versatile Soprano in Central Florida, and known to many as “The Sweetheart of the Villages.” Her masterful presentation of Broadway and other popular music will be a treat for all. With Valentine’s Day falling just a few days earlier, take this opportunity to treat your spouse or best friend to a marvelous evening of outstanding music. We will be reserving a couple of front row tables for early arriving members who have been married for 50 years or more.
Many if not most of our long-time members have heard Mary Jo perform; at Hope Lutheran, at Special shows with other male and female singers, and many times in community fundraisers where she donates her time to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Mary Jo will have copies of her CDs available for purchase and autograph after the performance.
Because we expect a large turnout, we will be using the E-invite system to get a feel for attendance. You will get an emailed E-invite asking you to respond to let us know you plan to attend. Please do so. We want to fill the room for our feature program of the year. Come early to get checked in and get seated. We will again have tables for singles.
BYOB and snacks for your table.
2018-19 Officer Nominations
As Club President, I am the nominating committee chair. Since our last newsletter, we have been successful in securing candidates for President, Vice President-Programs, and Treasurer. We are still searching for members interested in becoming Secretary or Membership Chair and Assistant Treasurer. If you would like to become a vital part of leading our great club, please talk to our Secretary (Bill Cammack) or Membership Chair (Joanne Schachtner) to get detailed insight into what each position involves. Our slate of officers will be announced at the March meeting; elections take place at the April meeting.
March 19, 2018, meeting
The March 19th meeting will feature entertainment by Me and My Gang. Snacks will be a potluck (details in the next newsletter). We also plan to have fresh cheese curds shipped in from Wisconsin.
Monday, February 26th, Sunday, March 25th, and Monday, April 23rd are our game nights at 6 PM at the Bacall Rec. Center on Canal Street. If interested, just show up; BYOB and snacks. These fun nights continue each month on the fourth Monday unless otherwise announced.

Wisconsin Singers –Savannah Center-Tuesday, March 27, 2018 – 5 and 8 PM
The Wisconsin Singers will again be performing in the Villages during their spring break. Performances will be on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at 5 and 8 PM at the Savannah Center.
This group of high energy college students, most of whom are not music majors, will get your juices flowing with the high tempo music, dancing, and instrumental performances. This group gets no funding from the University of Wisconsin.
In addition to helping them fund continued performances, our purchase of tickets serves as a fundraiser for the three Wisconsin Clubs in the Villages. Tickets are $20 for Village residents; $25 for others. We have discount coupons available allowing our members to buy up to 6 tickets at a $2 discount but can only be used at the Villages Box office. They will be available again at the February meeting or can be obtained from our Treasurer, Hal Baumann, 2003 Ridge Spring Drive (352-259-6552). Call Hal if you want to pick some up before the next meeting.
Joint Golf Outings
We will again be joining the Paradise club in two joint golf outings. These scramble events will be on Saturday, May 5, and Saturday, September 29. Cost is $2 per person. Marylyn Butenhof will be at our February and March meetings to start the signup process. After the events, members get together for food, fellowship, and prizes
2018 Dues remain $5 per member
Joanie Schachtner will be collecting dues for 2018 at future meetings. New members will be issued new magnetic name holders at no charge. If one is lost, there will be a nominal replacement fee.
President’s Personal Message.
Congratulations one last time to our Wisconsin Badgers football team for a season to be remembered.
The Women’s hockey team is undefeated and still ranked #1. The men’s basketball team is struggling against many of the Big Ten teams. They will need to get on a roll if they wish to extend their streak of consecutive NCAA appearances. My guess is they will fall short of reaching that goal. Men’s hockey is playing better but still lack the solid goaltending and team defense needed to be successful.
Ted Thompson is GONE!! Will the Packers new General Manager be able to get the draft and free agent signing mix right so we will have a chance to again see our Packers succeed? Will our new defensive coordinator be able to get his players to run fast and tackle? We will see.
Dinah and I are grateful to all the many friends we have made in our club and for all your prayers. Due to lingering medical issues, she has not been able to attend recent meetings. Dinah plans to be at the February meeting to enjoy our favorite female vocalist, Mary Jo Vitale MacLean. We don’t quite make the 50-year mark (only 47) but having her with me will be an extra special Valentines gift.
As you go about your daily activities, either here in the Villages, or while traveling, be proud to say “We are from Wisconsin”.
