February 2018 President’s Message
I was truly honored to have the privilege of introducing Mary Jo Vitale, one of the premier Sopranos in the Villages, at our February meeting. Dinah and I have gotten to know her through Hope Lutheran Church where Dinah has been the volunteer coordinator for several years of SEEDS OF HOPE concerts. Our Pastor’s wife and a mother of two, Mary Jo has graciously donated her time and talent for a Seeds of Hope concert each year.
Thanks to our members who filled the room. With February being the Valentine’s Day month, several love songs plus songs from Broadway were performed superbly. We had over 10 couples in attendance who had been married for more than 50 years. A couple who are new members were married 63 years ago.
New members included: Pat Benish, Waukesha; Kerry Blaney, Green Bay; Bob and Lynn Brown, Holmen; Bob and Donna Brownlee, Appleton; Doug and JoAnn Byers, Waukesha; Kathy Freitag and Denny Hall, Greendale; Shirley Genova-Johnson, Minocqua; Ed and Marilyn Hannan, Greendale; Connie Jordan, Fond du Lac; Dan and Cheryl Mueller, Holmen; Jim and Carol O’Keane, Oshkosh; Chuck and Rosemary Ries, Menomonee Falls; Keith and Ellen Sperling, Madison; Richard and Sandra Stevens; Jon and Nancy Wellhoefer, Greenfield. I wish I could have introduced all of you to our members and I hope to see you at many of our future meetings.
March 19, 2018 meeting 7 PM
Laugh along with Me and My Gang during our March 19 meeting. Enjoy comedian Frankie Pal, dancers, singers and comedy skits performed by a high energy, innovative group. The evening promises to be a fun-filled, entertaining, non-stop production jam-packed with dancing, singing, and comedy.
BYOB and snacks to share at your table. By popular request, we also plan to have fresh cheese curds shipped in from Wisconsin. We will also be playing “Any Wisconsinite” bingo, complete with fabulous so-so prizes, prior to our entertainment. Bring a pen or pencil to fill out your bingo card. Doors open at 6:30, meeting at 7:00 PM. Non-members may attend-$5 guest fee.
2018-19 Officer Nominations
As Club President, I am the nominating committee chair. As mentioned in my last newsletter, we have been successful in securing candidates for President, Vice President-Programs, and Treasurer. We are still searching for members interested in becoming Secretary or Membership Chair and Assistant Treasurer. If you would like to become a vital part of leading our great club, please talk to our Secretary (Bill Cammack) or Membership Chair (Joanne Schachtner) to get detailed insight into what each position involves. Our slate of officers will be announced at the March meeting; elections take place at the April meeting. I will be remaining on the Board as Past President.
Wisconsin Singers –Savannah Center-Tuesday, March 27, 2018 – 5 and 8 PM
The Wisconsin Singers will again be performing in the Villages during their spring break. Performances will be on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at 5 PM and 8 PM at the Savannah Center.
This group of high energy college students, most of whom are not music majors, will get your juices flowing with the high tempo music, dancing, and instrumental performances. This group gets no funding from the University of Wisconsin.
In addition to helping them fund continued performances, our purchase of tickets serves as a fundraiser for the three Wisconsin Clubs in the Villages. Tickets are $20 for Village residents; $25 for others. We have discount coupons available allowing our members to buy up to 6 tickets at a $2 discount but can only be used at the Villages Box office. They will be available again at the March meeting or can be obtained from our Treasurer, Hal Baumann, 2003 Ridge Spring Drive (352-259-6552). Call Hal if you want to pick some up before the next meeting.
Since many of you may not know a lot about the Wisconsin Singers history, we will be sending out a special email with detailed information. Dinah and I have invited neighbors to attend; they have truly enjoyed the shows. You can do the same. Help us fill the house for both performances.
Our next game night is SUNDAY MARCH 25th (a change from the normal schedule). Monday, April 23rd and Monday, May 28th are also game nights at 6 PM at the Bacall Rec. Center on Canal Street. If interested, just show up; BYOB and snacks. These fun nights continue each month on the fourth Monday unless otherwise announced.
Thank you to Judy Cimbalnik for organizing our dining out groups. Judy has finalized the next series of dining out groups for the months of February thru May. This is an excellent way to get to know other club members. If you are a single, Judy has a group for you. If you haven’t participated, especially our new members, and want to sign up contact Judy at email@example.com or by phone at 262-391-9869.
Joint Golf Outings
We will again be joining the Paradise club in two joint golf outings. These scramble events will be on Saturday, May 5, and Saturday, September 29. Cost is $2 per person. Marylyn Butenhof will be at our March meeting to continue the signup process. After the events, members get together for food, fellowship, and prizes. The May 5th event will be at the Pimlico and Belmont courses. Dinah and I have played previously and will do so again.
Wisconsin Club Golf Outing – Monday, April 9, Harbor Hills
Each of you should already have received a detailed invitation to join us in our first Club golf outing scheduled for Monday, April 9th at Harbor Hills, just a short ride Eas of the Villages. Having previously played the course, I can attest to it being a wonderful location for an 18 hole scramble format event. Dinah and I will be golfing with a couple from our neighborhood and plan to have a lot of fun. We hope a lot of you will join us for a great time. Thank you, Joe Keyzers for volunteering to organize the event.
2018 Dues remain $5 per member
Joanie Schachtner will be collecting dues for 2018 at future meetings. New members will be issued new magnetic name holders at no charge. If one is lost, there will be a nominal replacement fee.
President’s Personal Message.
March Madness is almost upon us. Normally we would be talking about Wisconsin’s chances. Not this year. Unless they win the Big Ten Tourney this week at Madison Square Garden, they will not make the tournament. Ethan Happ works hard but a lack of consistent play by the team, and his own free throw woes will probably result in no post-season play this year. The Wisconsin Women’s Hockey team(29-3-2) are WCHA Champs and rated #1. Four current or former Lady Badger skaters were also part of the Gold Medal USA Olympic Hockey Team. THANK YOU, LADIES FOR MAKING US PROUD!!
While I am only a part-time baseball fan, the major league season is just around the corner. The Milwaukee Brewers have some strong supporters in our club. I sincerely hope the Brewers continue to improve. Soon enough we will be looking forward to UW spring football practice and discussing the draft picks the Packers made or should have made as we look forward to next fall.
As you go about your daily activities, either here in the Villages, or while traveling, be proud to say “We are from Wisconsin”.
