September 2017 President’s message
September is time for Football, Wisconsin Club meetings, and unfortunately, hurricane season. Over the next week be careful, heed any local emergency advice… and if in The Villages in September, plan to attend our first fall meeting on September 18th at 7 PM at Colony Cottage Recreation Center. Upcoming event details follow.
September 18, 2017, Meeting – Back To School!
It’s “Back to School”, but we won’t ask you to be smarter than a fifth grader! All you need is your general knowledge and a few facts about Wisconsin for your chance to experience the next step in Team Trivia. Ric Mitchell, Game Show Man and local radio personality will be asking the questions and we will be answering on electronic tablets on Monday, September 18th at 7 PM at Colony Cottage Rec. Center. Ric makes the night go fast and truly enjoyable. This is a return visit to our Club having entertained us several years ago.
If you will be in the Villages, we hope you can attend and get our 2017-18 meeting schedule off to a rousing start. If you have friends with Wisconsin ties, invite them to join in the fun.
Attending members with the last name starting A-H please bring non-sweet or salty snack or appetizer like cheese crackers, chips and dip, cocktail meats, or salad; I thru P, please bring a fresh fruit or veggie type snack or appetizer; Q thru Z please bring a dessert(sugar-free options are always appreciated). Plates, napkins etc. along with decaf coffee will be provided.

Joint Wisconsin Club Golf Outing
Marylyn Butenhof will be at our September meeting to sign up interested members for the fall event ($2) which will be on September 30th (Hawkes Bay or Saddlebrook). Foursomes are picked at random. Singles are always welcomed. Participants get a ticket for a pitcher of beer or a soft drink. The group gathers after golf at a local restaurant for drinks and awarding of prizes. It is a great way to get to know other people with Wisconsin connections. Ray Haas (352-750-5142) of the Paradise Club is the Event Chair.
2018 Dues remain $5 per member
Joanie Schachtner will be collecting dues for 2018 starting at our September meeting. New members will be issued new magnetic name holders at no charge. If one is lost, there will be a nominal replacement fee. We have 310 members after removing from our list those who have not recently paid dues.
President’s Personal Message
The Badgers won, but it wasn’t pretty. In 2012 Wisconsin almost lost to Utah State. Last Friday evening there was a lot of hand-wringing as we seemed to sleepwalk thru the first quarter. Then they woke up and scored 51 straight points. Even Joe Ferguson, a backup linebacker (Barry’s grandson), got in the record books with a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown. Florida Atlantic comes to town this weekend; Wisconsin is a huge favorite and I expect them to play much better. I continue to predict a 10-3 season or better. A visit to BYU on September 16th (3:30 pmEastern start) looks like the biggest test before the Big Ten season. Next year’s schedule looks extremely challenging.
Our Packers open the regular season on September 10th (4:25 pm Eastern-Fox) against the Seahawks. They came thru with no major injuries and have added some significant free agents on defense. Let’s hope they get off to a faster start this year. Let Bill Cammack (352-399-5654) know if you will attend and meet us at Cody’s in Brownwood. Thank you, Bill, for coordinating our Packer viewing parties again this year.
The Milwaukee Brewers are giving me fits. As I write this message, the Brewers have lost three straight to Cincinnati and face the Cub’s this weekend in a very important series, not only divisional but also a wild card. The starting pitching has been OK but timely hitting and strong relief pitching continue to be sorely needed.
As you go about your daily activities, either here in the Villages, or while up north or traveling, be proud to say “We are from Wisconsin”.
