WI Club July 2017 President’s Message

Summer is definitely here; hot, humid and plenty of recent rain both here in the Villages and up North in many areas of Wisconsin. We want to thank all of our members who responded to our recent survey. We appreciate your comments and will do our best to provide you with enjoyable events in the next year. If you change your email address, please let us know so we can maintain contact as we approach the start of our regular meetings. Now let me highlight some early and important events.

September 18, 2017, Meeting – Back To School!

It’s “Back to School”, but we won’t ask you to be smarter than a fifth grader! All you need is your general knowledge and a few facts about Wisconsin for your chance to experience the next step in Team Trivia. Ric Mitchell, Game Show Man and local radio personality will be asking the questions and we will be answering on electronic tablets on Monday, September 18th at 7 PM at Colony Cottage Rec. Center. Ric makes the night go fast and truly enjoyable. This is a return visit to our Club having been our entertainment several years ago.

If you will be in the Villages, we hope you can attend and get our 2017-18 meeting schedule off to a rousing start. If you have friends with Wisconsin ties, invite them to join in the fun.

Attending members with the last name starting A-H please bring non-sweet or salty snack or an appetizer like cheese crackers, chips and dip, cocktail meats, or salad; I thru P, please bring a fresh fruit or veggie type snack or appetizer; Q thru Z please bring a dessert (sugar-free options are always appreciated). Plates, napkins etc. will be provided.

October 16, 2017 – Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest returns to Colony Cottage on Monday, October 16, 2017, with special food and entertainment. Ron The Music Man will entertain us with his endless variety of German music. Bring your dancing shoes because he will get you on your feet throughout the evening.

Starting time (TBA) will be earlier than normal. We are working on selecting the food provider. Tickets at $15 each will be required. We expect to have tickets available for sale by mid-August

The $15 Tickets will be available from Hal Baumann at our Packer Game viewing parties or our September meeting. Tickets are also available from Hal Baumann by sending him a check (made out to WISCONSIN CLUB LAKE SUMTER) to his home at 2003 Ridge Spring Drive, The Villages, FL 32162. Enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope if you want the tickets mailed to you. Otherwise, the tickets will be held for you at the door.

Holiday Party – Tuesday, December 5, 2017

Game Night

You don’t need to wait until September to have some fun with fellow Wisconsin Club members. Monday, July 24th, Monday, August 28th, and Monday, September 25th are the next three game nights at 6 PM at Bacall Rec. Center on Canal Street. If interested, just show up; BYOB and snacks. These fun nights continue each month on the fourth Monday.

Joint Wisconsin Club Golf Outing

Marylyn Butenhof will be at our September meeting to sign up interested members for the fall event ($2) which will be on September 30th (Hawkes Bay or Saddlebrook). Foursomes are picked at random. Singles are always welcomed. Participants get a ticket for a pitcher of beer or a soft drink. The group gathers after golf at a local restaurant for drinks and awarding of prizes. It is a great way to get to know other people with Wisconsin connections. Ray Haas (352-750-5142) of the Paradise Club is the Event Chair.

2018 Dues remain $5 per member

Joanie Schachtner will be collecting dues for 2018 starting at our September meeting. New members will be issued new magnetic name holders at no charge. If one is lost, there will be a nominal replacement fee. We have 310 members after removing from our list those who have not recently paid dues.

President’s Personal Message

Sorry I missed game night last month. We had a much needed (at that time) heavy rain and I decided to stay dry at home. I do plan to come again in July.

At our home in the Village of Hemingway, things look a little different, both out front and in the back. We had Fairfield Farms do a makeover of the front and add landscaping in the rear. They did a great job and I even got my Wisconsin W back out front, at least for now.

Speaking of the Red and White, our Wisconsin Badgers will be starting fall practice early next month. The first game, Friday, September 1st, against Utah State will be a night game with national coverage on ESPN. I might be overly optimistic but I am predicting a 10-3 season or better. A visit to BYU in mid September looks like the biggest test before the Big Ten season starts. Next year’s schedule looks extremely challenging.

Speaking of future games, the Badgers will travel to Florida in 2019 for an August 31st game against South Florida down in Tampa. Since this is the first game on the schedule that year, I will probably get tickets and go before making a trip up North. Could we get a group together to attend the game? Let me know if you may be interested.

The Packers open their training camp on July 27th. For a complete schedule and training camp information, go to www.packers.com. If you have never attended an open practice, I would encourage you to do so. The first pre season game against the Eagles is August 10th. The Packers open the regular season on September 10th (4:25 pm Eastern-Fox) against the Seahawks. Let Bill Cammack know you will attend and meet us at Cody’s in Brownwood. Thank you, Bill, for coordinating our Packer viewing parties again this year.

The Milwaukee Brewers continue to surprise me. As I write this message, the Brewers remain in first place in their division; even took a series on the road from the Yankees. After the All Star break anything can happen. But for now, it’s great to have another sports team from Wisconsin to cheer on.

As you go about your daily activities, either here in the Villages, or while up north or traveling, be proud to say “We are from Wisconsin”.

Your President
Richard Thies
