September 12, 2016 President’s Message

wi-game-groupLAMBEAU Field; WISCONSIN 16 – LSU 14; ELECTRIC ATMOSPHERE, EXCITING, LOUD, WORRYSOME, TENSE, JOYFUL all describe the game at some point.

Club members Don and Nancy Walker joined Dinah and I on our trip to Lambeau Field for the LAMBEAU FIELD COLLEGE CLASSIC featuring the 5th ranked LSU TIGERS and our WISCONSIN BADGERS. Wisconsin has two seasons; Winter and Road Construction. Heeding DOT advice, we left at 8:30. I knew the route; 2 hr. travel time from Madison, but WOW, what traffic. Hwy. 26 shortcut; NA NA; the Rosendale stoplight backed up traffic for about 5 miles.

Ashland Avenue as a quick route to Lambeau; NOT SO FAST as many others did the wi-gamesame.  About 11:45 we parked in sight of Lambeau on Mike McCarthy Way to tailgate. Relax, chow down, walk through the crowds (LSU fans all over), and ride the escalator up to Section 735S, upper deck, Southeast corner. Front row seats, 20000+ LSU and 55000+ Badger fans. As usual, the UW student section was the last to fill but they stood and cheered the whole game. An extra treat was meeting Madison friends Mark and Nan Thompson before the game.

I had predicted a low scoring game. Our defense played very well; our offense made lambeau-leap
some mistakes but in the end, WE WON. JOY; HUGS, KISSES, 5TH QUARTER, LAMBEAU LEAPS BY MANY PLAYERS, AND WALKING NEXT TO THE UW BAND on the way back to the car.

My take on the game? Our defense will make or break our season. Bart Houston (named after Bart Starr) needs to get better, and I think he will. Offensive line got push and blocked well overall.

Tight end Troy Fumagalli and kicker Rafael Gaglianone had great games. Question jumbotronmarks? Can the offense score enough touchdowns; will the wide receivers get open, catch and hang on to the ball; will the punting improve, and will we have a punt and kickoff return game. Overall, I believe we have the potential for a 10 win season barring major injuries.
